Well, whilst I can't claim to be any kind of culture vulture, I do like what I like and I find that what I like covers a very diverse area of interest. Easy culture for me is definitely music, cinema, art, theatre and TV. Again the diversity of each of those areas is quite broad. I guess my early musical experiences when I played in the brass band started to lay the foundations of a broad appreciation of music. If you were to look through my CD collection you would find mostly modern artists and if you were to get into my car you would find that the radio was tuned to the pop stations. I don't think I'm trying to hang onto some kind of false youth, but I really don't like to hold on to any particular era, say when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I'm not saying that I want to disregard that music, far from it as there was some fantastic music generated then and it's a great reference point, but things move on and I want to move with them. I always think of my era as now, and my appreciation of music reflects that. However I really do like all kinds of music if it 'does it' for me. And what does it can be Film score music, theatrical musical music, Opera infect absolutely anything. But like everything, some of it is dire and some of it is the most emotive, inspiring music you could ever hear. Whenever I drive (which is often) I will always have music playing and I take a lot of pleasure from it. I love to go to the cinema. I don't go often enough but to see a good film is a joy. Of course what I deem to be a good film is entirely subjective and probably completely different to what you would think a good film. I can't ever seem to get in to science fiction. I think the logical side of my brain finds it difficult to suspend disbelief and I'm constantly interrupting the flow of the film in my mind by wondering how such a special effect was achieved ! Not really the thing to do if you're going to be drawn into a film !! I like a good thriller or suspense movie. I like a film which is based on fact, one which will make you think a little. I like a good romance, you might even call it a girlie movie (I sometimes go with my friends wife's or girlfriends to watch them) but you just can't beat a good James Bond action kind of movie. So you see my tastes are quite diverse I DO hope that you remember coming to see the Lion King with me and your mum. It really has been one of the nicest evenings I have spent for all sorts of reasons, but over all it was because of the way you took my hand and set the agenda for the evening. But I DID want to take you there as I hoped that it would strike a chord with you. Maybe you were too tired or maybe too young, but perhaps one day I'll find out from you. The fact is that I enjoy going to the theatre occasionally, not nearly enough as I would like considering the variety and choice which I have here in London, but it is an occasion and worth limiting ones attendances to those things which you really want to see. I'm by no stretch of the imagination artistic, but I do like to look around art galleries when the mood takes me. I often wonder just how differently an artist must see things from me, to be able to draw or paint them as cleverly as they do. Still it's not something I can do anything about, but it doesn't stop me appreciating their art, for whatever reason I do. |
